Map of Mars

Nível Iniciante

There is a new video. It shows Mars. You can see Mars’s surface. You can see all the mountains and craters.

The video is from many pictures. A special camera takes these pictures.

The camera started to work in 2003. It is still working. The camera goes around Mars 12,500 times. It sends pictures to Earth. The camera will stop working in 2014.

Difficult words: surface (ground), crater (space in the ground), Earth (our planet).

Nível Intermediário

If you’d like to see the planet Mars in detail, you can. There is new video of Mars’s surface.
You can see all the mountains, craters and river beds. The video uses images which were taken by a special camera. The camera can sees Mars’s surface from 9 different angles.
The satellite with the camera started to work in 2003. Its mission was originally two years long, but it still works. The satellite has gone around Mars 12,500 times and it will continue to work until the end of 2014.
Difficult words: crater (hole in the ground), river bed (bottom of a river), satellite (machine which goes around a planet).

Nível Avançado

Mountains, craters, ancient river beds and lava flows. this is the Martian landscape portrayed in a new video to give the viewer the experience of flying over the surface.

Images have been taken from a stereographic camera on board the European Space Agency’s Mars Express probe. The camera is made up of nine individual image sensors with each one sweeping the surface from a different angle.

The soundtrack created by Stephan Elgner, a member of the mission’s mapping team.

The satellite has orbited the red planet nearly twelve thousand five hundred times (12,500), building up a digital topography that is almost planet-wide. The Mars Express was launched in June 2003 on a two-year primary mission. It has massively surpassed that and is set to continue to relay data back to Earth until at least the end of 2014.

Difficult words: crater (hole in the ground), ancient (very old), river bed (bottom of a river), flow (movement), stereographic (type of a camera), probe (machine for discovering space), sweep (examine), orbit (go around), topography (way the landscape is arranged), massively (a lot), surpass (be better than), relay (send).
