Very old animals

Nível Iniciante

Scientists found a 55-million-year old fossil. They found it in China. The fossil is a primate. The fossil is important because scientists thought the primates started in Africa. But now it is a time for a big change of this idea.

Scientists made a picture of this animal on the computer. It is like a small monkey but it has hands like a man. This animal lived during the day, not at night. This is new information too.

Scientists will study this fossil. They will know more information soon. It is very interesting.

Interesting words: scientist (clever person who is an expert in something), fossil (rock with picture of an animal), primate (animal like a monkey, gorilla or man), thought (past form of think).

Nível Intermediário

A 55-million-year old fossil of a primate was found in China. The location is very important. It might mean that primates didn't begin their evolution in Africa as most scientists used to think.

Scientists used modern technology to create an image of the animal. It probably looked like a small monkey with hands similar to human hands.

There used to be a theory that all animals were active during the night but that might change as well. Scientists say that this animal was active during the day.

The fossil is going to be studied so we can learn more about evolution - when and where it began.

Interesting words: fossil (rock with a picture of an animal), primate (mammal like a monkey or a human) used to think (thought).

Nível Avançado

At 55 million years old Archcebus achilles could be the oldest primate fossil humans have ever discovered. It's important because it was found in China questing the long held belief that primates began their evolution in Africa.

By using computer technology, researchers created an image of the animal.

"After the fossil was scanned with radiation we could see the other side of it, which meant we were able to reconstruct it."

The animal was about the size of a mouse. It had monkey feet and humanoid-like hands. The researches reckon it wasn't nocturnal like similar ancient species.

"According to our analysis this primate was more active during the day. Originally we had a theory that all animals were nocturnal and it took a long time for apes to become diurnal. However, this fossil proves that apes were diurnal a long time ago."

The scientists say the fossil represents a point in evolution when primates diverged into two groups--tarsier primates and anthropoids--whose modern descendants include monkeys and humans.

"Now we've discovered this fossil we can say without any doubt that the evolution history of mankind started ten million years earlier than we had expected."

The fossil's going to continue to be studied so we can learn more about when and where the evolution of modern primates began.

Interesting words: humanoid-like (looking like a human), reckon (think), nocturnal (active at night), diurnal (active during the day), diverged (split).
